Syosset is a hamlet home in the town of Oyster Bay. The name is derived from the Indian name for place in the pines. Robert Williams purchased the land for a couple of dollars worth of cloth from Matinecock Indians. In the beginning, it was a farming community until the Long Island Railroad arrived in 1854. In the 1900’s farming was still going strong with the first industry being created with the Syosset Pickle Factory.
Syosset Central School District serves the community with 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school along with Our Lady of Mercy Academy which is a Catholic College preparatory school for women. The community offers a variety of shops, restaurants, churches, and real estate opportunities including condos.
The major attraction in the area is the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park in Woodbury offering a playground, swimming pools and an ice rink among other recreational activities.
